I had the honour of serving on Council with Ken during my very first term. He was a true gentleman and put lots of thought into every decision. I learned a lot from Ken and had tremendous respect for him. In later years, I served on Council with Brad who, thankfully, is just like his dad!

My condolences to the Smokum family. Ken was very welcoming when I started into politics in 1978 and he was a solid Member of Council during my whole time on Council up to 1988 when we both decided to retire from politics. Ken was always fair and provided sage advice on many issues. I particularly remember his expertise relating to road matters not just in his ward but throughout the whole Town.

The Wheatley Hunt Club has lost a great and dear friend in Ken's passing. We all understand the inevitable truth of losing loved ones but that never helps to ease the loss. Our families have been great hunting neighbours for generations and even though all of the older hunters have passed on, we "kids" will miss his smiling face and his stories of days gone. I know from the countless times that we chatted, that Norma and you kids were his life long devotion. He was so very proud of all that you kids have accomplished in life and took such joy in watching the next generation join your Pakesley crew, as all the old hunt camps do in a world of vanishing outdoorsmen. Our deepest sympathies from the whole gang here, and we'll look forward to seeing you all in November.
