Smart, William James (Jamie)
At his home in Georgina, on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the age of 62 years. Jamie Smart predeceased by his parents William Frederick Alfred Smart and Anne Kelso Smart (nee Warwick). Brother of Susan Young of Georgina. Uncle of Robert Frederick Arlidge (Lori), Anne Kelso (Kelly) Young-Bambury (John Cook), and Erin Elizabeth Young (Jason Langford). Great Uncle of R.J. Arlidge, Katelynn Arlidge and Samantha Skrepnek. Jamie will be remembered by his extended family and his many friends, especially those with equine passion. Jamie rode in two Olympics for Team Canada and two Pan Am Games.Jamie began riding in 1961 at Eglinton Pony Club, and has been riding for 42 years of which over 20 have been spent representing Canada internationally. Formerly on the Canadian Show Jumping team, Jamie won several Grand Prix, the Puissance at the Royal Winter Fair in 1974 and the 1974 National Show Jumping Championship. Jamie then moved on to become the veteran of Canada's three-day event team, having competed in and completed over 30 international CCI events. He has been a member of two Canadian Olympic Teams, Fontainebleau in 1980 and Seoul in 1988 and brought home the silver and gold Canadian Team medals in the 1987 and 1991 Pan American Games. Jamie has taken Leading Foreign Rider honours three times at the Rolex three-day event in Kentucky, where he placed 16th on "Fascination Street" in 1994 and consequently qualified for and participated in the 1994 World Championships in The Hague, and hence assisted as a team member in qualifying Canada for the 1996 Olympics. Resting at the Forrest & Taylor Funeral Home 20846 Dalton Road, Sutton, Thursday, June 13, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service in the Chapel, Friday, June 14, 2013 at 11:00am. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto at 2:00pm.
