Liedl, Rudolf

Peacefully at his home in Sutton with family, on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the age of 83 years. Rudi Liedl, beloved husband of Annie McDonald-Liedl and the late Angelika. Dear father of Robert Liedl and his wife Sandra of Vernon, B.C. and Karen Liedl and her husband Colin Beausejour of North Hatley, QC. Fondly remembered by Annie’s children Keevin Foskett and his wife Josee of Keswick and Karen Foskett and her partner David Dureault of Peterborough. Loving Opa of Florian, the late Oliver, Thomas, Matheo; Peyton (Steven) and Jade (Alex) and great Opa of Aura. Dear brother of Friedl Liedl of Austria. Fondly remembered by his extended family and friends. Rudi Liedl was born in Vorderweissenbach, Austria in 1934 to a shoemaker family. He was 12 years old when the war was over and was the son chosen to work at his uncles neighboring farm. His father, Ambros, decided there is no future on the farm, so he began his apprenticeship at a local bakery where he received his Master Baker Certification. Part of his job was bike delivery which lead to his interest in competitive sports. He trained as a cross country skier and became the provincial champion which launched his attempt to join the Austrian national ski team for Cortina winter Olympics. His love of skiing also lead him to the prestigious Arlberg ski school where he received accreditation as a certified ski instructor. In his mid 20’s he joined the local ambulance service in Linz where he spent the most enjoyable part of his youth. He met his future bride Angelika, a nurse and together they went to Toronto for their honeymoon and Canada became their home.

With his ambition and new found experience working for various bakeries, he moved his young family to Sutton to take over Alf’s Bakery in 1970. Rudi and Angelika ran the bakery until 1986. In retirement, he built and owned apartment buildings in Sutton.  In 1993 Rudi lost his wife Angelika and 2 years later was blessed to meet his current wife Annie McDonald with whom he was able to really really really really enjoy his retirement years.
