My sincere condolences to all of the Big Canoe family. I only discovered Barb's passing today. You have lost a very special lady in your family and community. I have been blessed to have known and worked with her at Waabgon Gamig. She always had a smile for everyone. She was a kind, caring and respectful woman. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I wish i coukd have been there :-( But I know you heard me sing..
Even though you also heard the calling of God's blissful ring,
You will be missed, you were one of a kind, such a gentle soul, and the best jokes you always had,
I know you're with so many that you've travelled with before, but still Io see you go? It makes my heart still so sad..
I wish you a good journey Barb, as you make your way..
I'll cherish all the laughs we had, until we meet again one day..

I feel blessed to have had time to work with and know Barb. Her focus on the good in life and her passion for her language and culture spread to all those who listened and laughed with her. I loved her stories about Don and we found that he and my ancestors came from the same area of Scotland. I'm sure she is with him now.
Condolences to the Big Canoe family especially her great nieces and nephews who learned so much from her wisdom and stories. I'm sure they will keep them alive.

As Rachel Big Canoe's little sister, I have visited the Island many times and met Auntie on all those occasions. She welcomed my family and made us to feel that she was our Auntie too! She even came and taught at the seminary in Toronto when I was there, as a favour to me. Your family and community is greater for having her a part of it - may she live in your memories and her teachings as she leaves this community and joins the community of the Creator.
Many Blessings,
Lee-Ann & Peter van Duinen (Emma, Nate, Abbi)

I had the pleasure of spending a day last spring with Auntie Barb. We were both attending and speaking at an educational conference. Her legendary reputation had preceded her as I have been teaching at Morning Glory P.S for many years and have developed quite a close relationship with Waabgon Gamig teachers and students. When I realized who I was sitting beside I knew it was going to be a rich experience. Sure enough Auntie Barb did some translating for me, discussed her passion for the need to keep her native language alive, her love for teaching and she shared many of her opinions both personal and professional with me.
She didn't hesitate to correct my pronunciation and I was kindly but "firmly" schooled as she saw fit on many different topics. It was an amazing day of laughter and conversation and I was astonished to learn she was 82 years old. She had the spirit and energy of someone much younger.
I feel privliedged to have met her and to have learned from her even just in that short time. I can only imagine the loss those close to her feel and I extend my love and condolences to all those that will miss her.
Rest peacefully Auntie Barb.
