As a junior, I frequently saw Mr. Learoyd on the course and was mesmerized by his relaxed but powerful golf swing. Years later I wanted to rejoin the Briars, and asked him if he'd give me a referral. (My ulterior motive was the hope that this would increase my chances of having a round of golf with him). He invited me to his home, where we had a coffee and a nice chat. I was intimidated in his presence because of his golfing prowess, but he was very relaxed and congenial. In concluding the meeting by offering to give me a good referral, he never mentioned that he was doing me a favour. Instead, he thanked me for allowing him to do this for me. What a gentleman!
Although Mr. Learoyd excelled in several sports, he was humble and always exuded dignity. A great role model of a sportsman.

John Learoyd was well recognized at the Briars Golf Club as one of the best golfers in the club’s 95 year history. John became a junior member in the early 1940’s and won the Club Championship 10 times between the years 1948 and 1984. He was known around the golf club as Johnny Learoyd and was a true gentleman who was always smiling.
My brothers and I were junior golfers in the late 1960’s, and we were fortunate to play in the evenings with John. We referred to him as Mr. Learoyd. He was a good coach and mentor on the golf course, and we learned not only how to properly swing the club, but more importantly how to control one’s emotions when you were having a poor round. He was not in favour of our occasional club toss in a fit of anger.
My brother Robbie recalls John attending some of the golf tournaments he competed in locally. He recalls John & George Holborn travelling to Brantford golf club to cheer him on for the entire four days at the Canadian PGA.
My brother Jim described John as “he was a true gentleman and a very bright guy. I played a lot of golf with him, and the Croziers (John and Verna) as a teenager”.
John Learoyd was presented in 2010 with a Lifetime Membership for his over 60 years of membership. The presenter of the award was Tom Chipman who played with John as far back as their junior days in the early 1940’s. Tom’s presentation to John included the following comment. “We knew John best in his junior days when he won almost everything in sight. He and Terry Malone fought it out most of the time while the rest of us hoped we didn’t get drawn against him”.
John was a man of few words. However there are many complimentary words spoken to describe the gentleman John Learoyd.

I will always remember John as a true gentleman and friend.
He was our hockey coach when we were younger and I will always remember him and George Holborn serving hot dogs at the Sutton Arena.
RIP, Johnny.
