Mr. McDermott was my Architectural Drafting teacher at Thornhill Secondary School (TSS) way, way back in the mid 60s. Our class was more a group of disruptive rascals rather than Rhodes Scholar candidates. However, "Big Al's" caring nature and dedication to his teaching profession finally won us over and we graduated from the initial TSS Technical stream cohort in June 1965, and went on to successful, fulfilling careers, in my case in the drafting/civil engineering/construction management field. I will be forever thankful to wise, dedicated, patient teachers like Alan McDermott and his TSS sidekicks George Lester, Dave Kerwin and Stan Elson who worked so hard saving us from ourselves and putting us on pathways to success and personal satisfaction !
