I have wonderful memories of John, Pat and Susan at dances at the Briars when it was the Sibbald's private home and Sunday mornings greeting John at St. George's church. John always had a sparkle in his eye and was very fond of my mother Sybil Rhind.

John was a gentleman and gracious host, even when a motley tribe of Maclean's journalists, guests from across the country and TV crews descended on The Briars to record two Citizens' Forums on the constitutional and economic issues of the land. It was fitting that John was our host, since he cared deeply about the country. I will always cherish the warm hospitality extended by John and Barbara. Sincere condolences to Barb and the family. Robert Lewis (Editor-in-Chief, Maclean's 1993-2000).

My sincere condolences to Barbara and the Sibbald family. My mom and dad (Glenys and Ev Gibbs) were frequent guests at The Briars and spent New Year's Eve at the Briars for at least 20 years or more. John's smile lit up a room. John will live on in the memories of those who knew him. Patricia Gibbs

We will treasure always the many fond memories we have of our annual gatherings at the Briars (53, and counting) and, especially, of our most gracious and generous host and friend. John would always give us his personal attention, to the point of giving each of us an engraved souvenir of our 40th anniversary gathering in 2006. John was an engaging raconteur and took pleasure in sharing with us his considerable knowledge on any one of a wide range of topics. He was truly an exceptional man and his love for his family and the property was always evident. It is a privilege to have known him. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Barbara, Hugh, and the Sibbald family. Frank Chown, on behalf of the Richardson Party

Dear Barbara, Andrew and all the Sibbald family;
I was really saddened to learn of John's passing. Hopefully the thoughts of his long, active and productive life, will bring you peace and fond memories.
The Briars really was a big part of my early life and I remember Sundays after Church, taking tea in the manor house before "The Briars" evolved. Such special times in a young girl's life. I have fond memories of time spent there with my family in the 1950s and later with my Mum in the 60s, and then with my own my children in the 70s and 80s.
I'm pretty sure that John's love of his family's history, so enthusiastically and openly shared helped to boost my interest in my own. He was such a good example in that regard and so interesting.
May your memories of his full and productive life bring you comfort and peace during this difficult time.
Sincerely, Catherine Low

I had the privilege of working for John and Barbara Sibbald from 1991 until the resort was sold. They were strict but wonderful employers that appreciated and respected their staff. Mr Sibbald loved the gardens, especially his beloved Rose garden. No matter what kind of day he was having, he always had a cheery smile and a story to share. I will always hold dear our weekly walks through the Briars gardens. Rest in Peace Mr Sibbald

Dear Barbara and family. Heartfelt sympathy on the passing of John. Mom held both you and he in such high regard and you enhanced her time at The Briars. I do remember you all in the early days --- as The Briars began ... and then after we said good bye to my mother and you let us gather in the library after her service. Keep well and God Bless.

Our deepest condolences to the Sibbald family in the massing of Mr. John Sibbad. I have worked for the Briars for a number of years and Mr. and Mrs. Sibbald used to come in occasionally and they were always so kind and wanting to know how we were and if there was anything they could do for us. This was my 1st contact of many seeing John and Barbara amongst the customers and employees and it felt like a large happy family. In later years John would come to the pool every Friday without missing a beat and he always had a cheery hello to pass on to anyone he came across.
When The Briars was sold, The Sibbald family rented The Lake Simcoe Arms for an evening and invited all the staff to enjoy an evening of fun and laughter on them. This will always be a fond memory of him and his family.
Thank you Mr. Sibbald for the joy of getting to know you and experience the history of this beautiful resort.
Rest in Peace
