I was lucky enough to have met Max when I was working in Geilenkirchen, West Germany. Max and Helene ran the Sally Ann center in the middle of town where we would congregate to share. He was a great man with a good laugh. I loved sharing a meal with him and his familly. My condolences to Helene and the family.

A year has passed since we lost Max. A year of remembering, grieving, laughter, and prayers.
Max was my friend and mentor, Shortly after he came to Hanover in 2008 to Pastor our Corps he and Helen called and came to visit me because he saw my name in the visitors book. I had been newly widowed and was in need of something. I found it at the Hanover Salvation Army Corps and thanks to Max and his perception and persistence I opened the doors of my heart and soul and let Jesus in and Jesus has walked with me ever since. The best decision I ever made.
Thank you Max for knowing my need and Bob's too.
We were so happy to see Max and Helen (and Timmy) on the last weekend of December 2018, when they came to visit and spend New Years 2019 with us. We were shocked to lose him on New Years Day. After the initial shock was over we were overjoyed to know that he had chosen the blue chair in the sunroom of our home in Hanover to be his final destination before the Lord took him home.
Thank you Max for being such a good friend, not only to Bob and I but to everyone you met.. You will be forever loved and never forgotten.
Rest in Peace Max.

Major Helen Bulmer and Family
On January 1st 2019 when we received word from Major Colleen Winter that Major Max Bulmer had been “promoted to glory” we found it hard to believe the news.
After getting our thoughts together; we sat for a while and thought about the “treasures” that are ours because we were privileged to share in the life and service of Major Max Bulmer.
We met Max in early September 1968 when we arrived at the College for Officer Training in Toronto. Max and Helen were Cadet Sergeants; providing support to the married Cadets of the “Undaunted” session of which Elva and I were members.
They demonstrated support to Elva and me and our son Graham. One of the responsibilities of the sergeant was to oversee the cleaning work areas of the first-year Cadet.
Max demonstrated care and compassion for the Cadets under his supervision. If needed, he was always willing to help.
When Elva and I were appointed to Dawson Creek, B.C. for our summer appointment; we were asked to leave our car in Toronto and travel by train. This meant we had no vehicle for use at Dawson Creek for the summer months. Max and Helen were officers at Peace River, B.C. and they arranged for us to use their vehicle for the whole time we were in Dawson Creek.
Serving as fellow members in our Salvation Army Georgina Church and Community we each saw Max’s boundless energy and deep love for others.
It is true that authentic love for God; honesty, purity; integrity and virtue were hallmarks of Max’s life.
Max was an encourager whose patience was shown even in his busiest moments. In reflection; we remember a man who loved God supremely; and was truly committed to bringing the lost to Jesus Christ.
He was known as a rock in the storm! He was more than generous with his most valuable resource; his time.
Max was on the cutting edge of service that improves humanity by developing relationships with others, and providing helpful support services to those in need.
When we think of Max and his limitless energy and service to others; we can’t help but be reminded of the words of Mother Teresa: “If in life we cannot always do great things; we can do small things with great love.”
Helen and family, for you we provide this promise; “….and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Be assured of our love and prayers. God be with you.
Welcome Home Major Max!

Max and Helen, we are so glad you came to Winnipeg this past spring. You usually requested a pork roast and so we had. We enjoyed playing the game of crib with the four of us and Helen and I enjoyed winning even tho we had to observe you carefully while playing.
Who knew our Christmas conversation would be our last.
As the saying goes "Your wings were ready but we were not".
Thank you for always making an effort to keep in touch.
Our love to you Helen, Kevin, Sandra and Dave, and all your precious grandchildren.
Your faith will keep you strong during this difficult time and thro the days ahead as your life here on earth goes on without him .
We cannot be there physically but will be in spirit.

I am so sorry to hear about Max. Liz and I often talk about our time in Germany and worshiping with both of you on Sunday nights. It was Max who asked me to share a message one weekend and how encouraging he was since it was out of my tradition. That memory has been a highlight for me.

We knew the Bulmers from our time in Lahr, Germany. He was the friendliest face at the Sally Ann. Always had time to share a good joke. I do believe I recall him telling of his dislike for carrots?! Even tho he made some wonderful desserts! I’m sure he will be missed by so so many. Condolences to his family & friends.

My dear cousin Tracey has described our dear Uncle Max perfectly.
We dearly dearly loved him.
He was a father figure to many of us.
Always in good humor and delighting us with his" Mrs. Pots hissing in the pit" joke.
Always there to support us in times of sorrow.
I can still see him standing at the front of the church for Uncle Roy and Uncle Jack. Later, patiently explaining to us that God didn't take away our beloved uncles, he was there to help us deal with the terrible loss(which we still feel). Now, we must endure another enormous loss with him close by in our hearts and not physically by our sides.
We always looked forward to his frequent visits to Serpent River, keeping us close to his family. The family reunions keeping us all in touch.
As I aged, he visited my home, always calling ahead to reserve supper. (No carrots or onions please!) He never missed an opportunity to get me back to church.I have faith because of him.
My husband Bruce, and kids Jamey and Jonathan, simply adored him.My grandkids knew him well too.He honored us all by officiating at our weddings and dedicating our children to the Salvation Army.
He came all the way up north to surprise us and renew our vows for our 25th anniversary. Always with Aunt Helen by his side.
Such a loving couple with a wonderful loving family.
Aunt Helen, our love is always with you as you take care of his beloved Timmy and wait to join him once again.
Sandra and Kevin, my heart is broken for you. You have been so blessed to have such a strong and caring Dad, it is a huge loss especially for you two. I hope your memories will sustain you.He was soooo proud of his grandchildren.Always updated me on what they were doing. He often texted me which I enjoyed immensely. Hugs to your babies, remind them how much he loved them every dayl
Be assured that he will never be forgotten by the Grays.
So much Love to everyone, Catherine

I first met Max and Helen when they were Cadets on placement at Wychwood Corps in Toronto, His kindness led me to live in Kirkland Lake with his sister. That has lead to a 50 year friendship with really nice people. Max was so helpful when my first husband died driving from North Bay to Windsor and back in one day just to bring people to the funeral. In recent years I would see Max at Jackson's Point every summer where we would catch up. I thank God for people like Max!

We held scrapbooking wknds for many years at the Jackson's Point Salvation Army Conference Centre and Max always came to visit us throughout the weekend with his sense of humor and always had a joke or 2 for us and of course, may have snuck a treat here and there. All the girls looked forward to seeing him because we knew we would have a good laugh and visit with Max. Thank you for the laughs Max, from all of us at Karen and Kelli's Scrapbooking Group. My dear Uncle Max was a great man. My dad Roy, Max's brother, passed away when I was six years old so, in many ways, he was a father figure to me. Throughout my childhood, Uncle Max was there for my mom, brother and I many times - through the good times and difficult times of illness and deaths in my family. He was like a rock for us.
I was blessed to spend three months with him and Aunt Helen when they were stationed in Lahr, Germany when I was 19. They both made me feel so welcome and provided me with my "home away from home", especially in my first three days of homesickness.
In those three months, I witnessed the love that he and Aunt Helen had for one another. They were truly best friends. I enjoyed joining him for vespers and Sunday morning service. Uncle Max's love for God and his church helped me to form and develop my own faith.
I have often said that Uncle Max is the glue of the Bulmer family. Who can forget his jokes around the campfire at the Bulmer family reunions and hilarious stories told in the gazebo! He often tried to trick gullible me - his favourite story of the motorcycle driver with the air conditioner on his bike was one that he reminded me of many times throughout the years! His officiating at the Bulmer weddings sure kept him in business!
My husband Jarett deeply respected my Uncle Max. He has said many times that he will never forget the support he gave us when our daughter was born.
Recently, he and Aunt Helen visited me so that he could teach me how to bake bread. What a talent he had! It was a special night that I will treasure forever.
Many of the Bulmers have a unique stride in their walk - a quick step with the upper body a little ahead of the lower body - and Uncle Max was no exception to this! I have said many times that my own daughter walks like Uncle Max and I was taken aback yesterday when she was walking ahead of me and I thought of Uncle Max... this time though with sadness that I will never see him on this earth again.
Without a doubt, I know that my beloved Uncle Max is in heaven with my dad and the rest of the Bulmer family members that have gone before us. Until we meet again Uncle Max... I thank you and I love you.
