Obituary of George Dracos
Dracos, George
After several years of living with Parkinson's disease, George Dracos, 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 5 am at his home in Sutton, Ontario. George was born in Klesoura, Greece in 1931 to Efstathia Drakos and Themistoklis Drakos. He had two brothers, Kostas and Andreas. Their biological mother passed away at the young age of 23. They were raised by their loving stepmother Eleni Drakos who later had two daughters Nikoletta and Angeliki.
George is survived by his beloved wife Dimitra and their three daughters Helen Poletes (John Poletes), Nikoletta Dracos (Joe Fleming) and Efstathia Dracos (Thomas Marshall) along with his cherished grandchildren, Georgia Poletes, Christopher Poletes, Liam Fleming, Micah Fleming, Jocasta Marshall and Calista Marshall. Also surviving are his siblings Kostas Drakos and Nikoletta Panagakos along with their families.
In his early years he served in the police force before immigrating to Canada in 1958 where he met his wife Dimitra in Toronto. They married in 1964. As young Greek immigrants they had great ambition and big dreams. They never forgot their roots and supported their families and friends as much as they could.
George worked tirelessly and was an entrepreneur with a dynamic personality. He loved to wear a tailored suit and tie even in the garden and in the kitchen. He loved to go on long drives, sleep in the car, travel, make videos and eat well. George discovered Sutton on one of his drives where he decided to acquire the legendary Anchor Restaurant. It was there that he and his family established lasting friendships with the local community.
George loved the ocean and visited his homeland of Greece many times with his family and friends. He loved kids and on several occasions he toured his girls, their friends and cousins through Greece, sleeping outside, visiting museums, beaches and historical sights. He made a lasting impression on people everywhere he went. He was passionate, animated and was a wonderful story teller. He instilled in his girls the importance of education and that they could do anything they dreamed of. George was a dreamer.
George will be remembered for his infectious smile, his charisma, and love for his family.
The funeral service will take place on Monday January 8 at 10:00 am in Markham at St. Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church, 11359 Warden Ave, Markham, ON L6C 1M9. The burial will follow in Sutton at Briar Hill Cemetery, 5500 Black River Rd. Georgina ON.
The family would like to thank the caregivers of March of Dimes, Bayshore Homecare Solutions, CCAC, ParaMed, Doctor Tung, and Father Odisseys Drossos of St. Panteleimon for their outstanding support over the years.
