So very sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Sloan. He was my hockey coach for the Sutton OMHA bantams and midgets for about 4 years in the late 1960's and early 1970's. HIs son Don was the captain of our team. He was a wonderful man and deeply respected by every player on the team. He was a true gentleman both on and off the ice. We were all very fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for him and learn from him. Not just on the ice but also how to conduct ourselves off the ice as well.
I have many great memories of playing hockey for Todd and would like to share a few:
I can recall how he emphasized skating at his practices (especially if we had played poorly the previous game). Pucks on the ice were not always a given. He would arrange each forward line along the goal line and then we would race one lap of the rink. No chance to "dog it" when there is only 3 of you (or 4 defensemen) being watched by the whole team! No one wanted to come last! As soon as one line was around the ice the next line went until we were all red in the face and had our tongues hanging out. Then we would move to skating around the face-off circles and goal in tight circles (both ways and backwards) picking up the speed when Todd blew the whistle. Then stops and starts, and so on!! He would smile and laugh and shout encouragement to all of us. I can't recall him speaking a harsh word to any player on the team (although I'm sure we deserved it sometimes).
We would grin when he would put on his skates before the practice as they were the old style with the fold up tendon guards on the back. We thought they were antiques. However, the smiles quickly disappeared when Todd would demonstrate a drill for us and it was immediately obvious he was still a better skater than any of us.
I recall visiting Don one day at their home in Jacksons Point and being in awe of all the hockey sticks up in the rafters with NHL players names on them. I can't recall him ever speaking about himself or his time in the NHL. It wasn't until later when I became aware of his stature as an NHL player and his courage and leadership in trying to organize a players association. A great man. He will not easily be forgotten!

My condolences to the Sloan family on the passing of Tod. I will never forget the kindness he showed by taking time from a pregame warm-up to sign an autograph for an 8 year old kid at rinkside. I followed his career from there and learned many lessons about life from his advocacy for the other players and for his reinstatement to play senior hockey. While I never became much of a player I still lace them up with old timers partly because of that few seconds meeting showing what the game is really all about.
Though I regret never having gotten to meet Tod again I learned a lot from him and if I ever get around to writing a book about the people who have influenced my life he will be there.
Wish you peace on the next step of your journey.

As an old hockey fan, I was sorry to read of the passing of Tod Sloan in today's paper. While I never saw him in action, I do have fond memories of listeneing to Foster Hewitt describe his plays on radio.
When I was about 10 years old I was given a hockey stick signed by all the Leafs, including Tod. I cherrised it for years and eventually donated it to the Hickey Hall of Fame.
My sincere condolences to the family. Although Tod Sloan is gone, he'll not be forgotten by this old fan.AYGb
